Ahhh, holidays (or vacations, sorry, North American friends; it just doesn’t sound right to me, I’m a creature of habit). That glorious time we take to leave our daily stresses behind and focus on enjoying ourselves! For most of us, our trips go without a hitch, that is, if you overlook budget airlines’ baggage fees and the inevitable forgotten toothbrush.

But for a small (and unlucky number of travellers, a holiday abroad can take an unexpected turn, not because of lost luggage, but because they fall victim to crime.

Seeing Neuschwanstein Castle in person, surrounded by stunning winter landscapes, was even more incredible and magical than I could ever expect. It truly took my breath away.

There’s something alluring about the idea of thousands of scattered islands stretching out into the Baltic Sea, each one of them with its own share of pristine nature. Simply imagining the cool air brushing against my cheek, the smell of pinewood filling my lungs, and the sun glistening off the sparkling waters, makes me want to head out to explore the Stockholm Archipelago this very instant. 

As someone born and raised in Mexico, visiting Chichén Itzá wasn’t just another family vacation. It felt like a homecoming. 

Why Write About Crime on a Travel Site?

After reading my last article, Why Do We Travel?, you might still be thinking, “Wait, but Cerys, what does crime have to do with travel?” I’m glad you asked. And yes, I’m sorry; I know I’ve taken my time getting here. 

Let’s get to the point.

For those of us who are lucky enough to be able to hop into our car, board a boat or plane, and travel beyond our hometown, we can expect so much more than an escape from our daily routine. Travelling provides an incredible opportunity to expand our horizons, explore life experiences beyond our own, and (true to the core values of this online community) learn. 

Long trips can disrupt everything children rely on. Sleep patterns shift. Meals lose structure. Growth, which depends on routine, gets pushed aside for schedules that don’t match a child’s rhythm.

When staying on the island of Kauai in the summer, there are so many fun things to do! From breath-taking nature to welcoming small towns to learning the history, the adventures are endless. Whether you are traveling solo, or with children, this was my amazing experience in paradise.
